I have completed 7 days in a classroom of 13, 4 year-olds. Without a helper. Yes - you heard that right.
Better than day 1? Yes. Am I sane yet? No.
There are things that are getting better. We are getting into a routine. We have an activity, play for 20 minutes, say the pledge, sing, do the weather, change the calendar, have snack time, use the bathroom, have a Bible story.....we have a routine.
Do they get it yet? Not quite. We have some fast learners. And we have some slow learners.
My teacher friends will understand when I say that even with 4 year olds you must have some differentiated learning. I have sat through SO many workshops and inservice days that talked about differentiated learning. But now I get it more than I have ever gotten it before. Some kids just don't get it the first 7 times we do it. And some get it on the first time.
So, I have kids that get the routine. And some that don't. The ones that get it are now at the point of distracting everyone because why? THEY'RE BORED WITH THE ROUTINE.
But I can't change it. I have to channel the fast learners energy in making them think they are the 'teachers' and have them 'teach' the ones that don't quite get what the routine is.
We are getting there. Its a process. And keeping things straight is something a blur.
But I am still alive. My kids are still alive. So, I guess I'm doing something right, huh?
My class during morning playtime - sure does look like I have it under control, huh? |
